What to Consider When Searching for a Family Photographer

Family Portraits

5 Simple Things to Consider When Booking a Photographer

How many of you have spent time cleaning and come across a box of pictures or an album you haven't seen in a while? I have personally spent countless hours sitting and sifting through those same kinds of boxes, remembering fun times, celebrations, love, and changes we all forget about.

Family portraits are more than just pictures. These portraits serve as cherished keepsakes that can be passed down through generations, reminding you of the special moments and milestones in your family's journey.

1. Your Desired Style:

Knowing your preferred style is important when selecting a photographer. You will want to make sure the styles align, or you will not be satisfied with the images you are purchasing. What helps me understand what I am looking for, I love to build a Pinterest mood board. Click here to see my Pinterest Profile.

Are you drawn to -

Soft, snuggly, emotional moments?

Playful, giggly, chaos-in-the-best-way energy?

Or something more posed and polished?

There’s no wrong answer here—just your story. Knowing what feels right to you will make it so much easier to find a photographer who already creates that kind of magic.

Pro Tip

Share your mood board with your photographer.

I value communication, and sharing your mood board gives me a visual of your desired session.

Not all photographers are the same. Every photographer has a unique style, a different eye, and their own way of capturing people and emotion.

2. The Photographer’s Style

Every photographer has their own way of telling a story—and that includes how they shoot, edit, and guide you during your session.

As you browse galleries, ask yourself a few questions.

Do these colors feel warm and true?

Can I imagine my family in these moments?

Do these photos feel like something I’d want on my walls?

If it feels like a yes, trust that feeling. The best sessions happen when your vision and your photographer’s style naturally align.

Red flag - Highlight reels on social media only show the “best of the best.” Ask to see a full session or wedding gallery so you can judge consistency, lighting, posing, and storytelling.

I favor bright and colorful edits.

I love capturing human emotion and interactions. I will take on the role of creative director when clients are shy and need more encouragement in front of the camera.

3. Location

Location sets the whole vibe for your session. My favorite location is at Shelter Gardens. The colorful flowers and plants create texture and playfulness in the grassy areas. The right photographer will help guide you to a location that feels like you, not just what looks good on camera.

Maybe it’s-

A golden field at sunset,

At a favorite park to create a more playful session,

Or the comfort of your own home, where your story already lives.

4. Budget

Photography is more than a quick snapshot—it’s an investment in memories you’ll hold onto for years (and maybe even pass down one day).

When thinking about the budget, consider:

What’s included in your session? - Length of session, designated number of images, prints, wall art, and access to digital images.

The experience you’ll have from start to finish. - Style guides, direction/posing, access to props, and an online gallery to share.

Red Flag - every photographer starts somewhere, but extremely cheap pricing with huge promises can sometimes signal a lack of experience or unsustainable business practices.

No Worries if you’re still figuring this out—just focus on finding someone whose work feels worth it to you. Book a discovery call with me today to talk through your needs and pricing.

These aren’t just images for today. They’re the ones you’ll come back to years from now, and the ones your family will hold onto long after that even after some of the people in them are gone.

5. Timeline

Good moments can’t be rushed—and neither can good photography. Many photographers book out weeks (sometimes months!) in advance. Editing does take time. I want to make sure your gallery can be delivered with care. If you have a specific date or season in mind, reaching out early gives you the best chance to make it happen without the stress.

Red Flag - Taking days or weeks to respond before booking can become an even bigger issue during your session or delivery process.

Good communication builds trust and helps clients feel supported.
